Chapter Ten

With Benton on my mind, I begin riding my bike toward the Hillcrest Market.

I want to ask the employees there if they remember seeing him on Monday afternoon. Maybe one of them saw him leave his hat behind. I might also be able to dig up some clues about Hank and Petra’s little side business of selling pot. The more I know about what they’ve been up to, the better chance I’ll have at figuring out how it ties into my case.

Petra’s name has come up twice now, in the course of my investigation.

Once, returning Benton’s hat. Then, talking to Hadley.

I need to know more about what she and Hank are up to.

Besides, that maple creamy was really good. I could go for another one. This time, I’m going to get a small instead of the kiddie cone.

I’ve worked up an appetite.

I park my bike outside of the market, and head in. I’ve decided that my soft serve cone will be my reward, once my investigative work is complete.

Work first, treats later. It’s a new thing I’m trying out. Usually a woman named Evonne works the register, but today it’s a blonde teen girl that I only vaguely recognize. I see Scotty stocking the coolers off to the right. Other than that, the store seems pretty quiet. A few shoppers, mostly moms with kids, stroll down the aisles, and our local radio station, Wolf Country, plays softly through overhead speakers.

I head over to the blonde teen.

“Are Hank or Petra here?” I ask.

“Hang on. Let me check.” She snaps her gum and then ambles off.

I watch her head over to an office door tucked into the wall just after a row of Hillcrest tee-shirts, mugs, and shot glasses.

She opens the door. It’s not locked.

Then she closes it and walks back to me. “Not here,” she says, with another snap of her gum. “You want me to take a message?” she asks.

“That’s alright,” I wave my hand. “I have a card I wanted to deliver to Hank. I’ll just leave it in his office.”

I smile and then walk confidently toward the office, as if it’s normal for me to just pop in and deliver a card.

In truth, I’ve never been in the office, but this girl is new and doesn’t know that, so she doesn’t stop me.

Once inside the office I close the door securely behind me and then start opening and shutting drawers in the desk as fast as I can, searching for clues. The desk is an absolute mess. I’m not sure what I’m looking for exactly—maybe baggies of pot, lots of cash, or proof that Hank was in cahoots with Whitey. I don’t know. My instincts are telling me to be here, so I am.

The surface of the desk is covered with papers of all shapes, sizes and colors. Invoices, paystubs, schedules, and receipts are stacked up in piles that seem completely random to me. Amidst the nest is a shiny, silver laptop.

I shuffle through the papers, searching for anything that looks relevant to my case.
